A Fair Deal for Our Troops

Why do British soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan earn less than trainee police officers?

Our troops deserve better. They deserve a better deal - better pay so that their families back home don't have to struggle to make ends meet from month to month.

Gordon Brown has let them down.

More and more stories are coming out about members of the Armed Forces getting a raw deal from Gordon Brown and the Labour Government:

• A Royal Marine hero has been forced to sell his medals to buy a home for his family

• Civil servants working in Afghanistan are being paid bonuses twenty times more than front-line troops

• - Trainee police officers and firefighters are paid more than many soldiers serving in Britain's Armed Forces

It is just not right. Our troops deserve a better deal from our Government.

That's why I am backing the new Lib Dem campaign "A better deal for our troops".

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has just announced that the Liberal Democrats would give a £6,000 pay rise to the lowest paid troops - with all the lower ranks getting a pay rise.

The recent victory over allowing retired Gurkha soldiers to stay in Britain shows the Government can be beaten - but we need to get action to help our troops now.
