Andrew Stunell MP wants to see Carers claim the benefits they are entitled to

Half of Stockport's carers aren't claiming the benefits they are entitled to, according figures obtained by Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell.

Information released to Mr Stunell in response to a Parliamentary question shows that 2,270 carers in Stockport aren't claiming Carer's Allowance, despite being entitled to do so. Many carers simply don't know about the help they could be receiving, which could make a big difference to their lives in the current economic crisis.

National charity Carers UK say that of the 36,000 carers in Stockport, almost 20,000 are juggling caring with paid employment, and nearly 4,500 carers are in poor health.

Now Mr Stunell is trying to improve the take up of Carers Allowance, so more carers can benefit.

Commenting Mr Stunell said:

"Carers do an amazing job, often juggling their responsibilities at home with a full-time job. They make huge sacrifices, and deserve a break.

"Carers' Allowance can give them that break, and make life just a little easier for them and the loved ones they care for, particularly in the current economic climate. Yet half the people in Stockport who are entitled to it are missing out.

"We need to do much more to make carers aware of the support they could be receiving. Advice on making a claim is available from the CAB or Stockport's Welfare Rights unit, who will be happy to help."
