STUNELL BACKS CAMPAIGN TO KEEP HAZEL GROVE DELIVERY OFFICE OPEN

2.31.00pm GMT Fri 20th Mar 2009

Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell has today declared his support for the CWU campaign to keep Hazel Grove Royal Mail Delivery Office open.

Mr Stunell has written to Royal Mail Chief Executive Adam Crozier to express his disappointment at the Royal Mail's current position, and to urge him to re-think the plans.

The proposals would see the delivery office relocated from Hazel Grove to Stockport - resulting in job losses, and meaning Andrew's constituents would have to make a 5-mile round trip to collect any undelivered mail.

Commenting, Andrew Stunell said:

"These proposals are dreadful. The closure of the Hazel Grove distribution office in my constituency would cause significant inconvenience for local people.

"The Royal Mail's decision to centralise the distribution of mail in Stockport will result in the even later delivery of mail, with heavy congestion on the route from the new distribution centre, longer journeys for staff and for people collecting undelivered mail, and the loss of a specific team of post deliverers for the area, who have a well-developed local knowledge.

"Many local people have been in touch to let me know of their concerns, which I absolutely support.

"I have written to Adam Crozier to express my opposition to these proposals, and will be fighting hard to keep Hazel Grove Delivery Office open."
