Stunell Quizzes Home Office Minister About Shortage Of Police On The Beat12.00.00am GMT Tue 5th Nov 2002 Andrew Stunell, MP for Hazel Grove has demanded that the Home Office minister take action to get more special constables on the beat after numbers have fallen to a record low in the Greater Manchester area. In answer to a question in Parliament from Mr Stunell, the minister has finally agreed to cut back red tape to allow retired officers to get back to work part-time and contribute to policing in a more flexible way. Mr Stunell said, "We have seen police numbers increase at last but the bad news is that the number of special constables on the beat has dived in just five years from 600 to 300. This is a sorry state of affairs that must be tackled. The people of Stockport deserve to feel safe on the streets" "The ministers belated announcement is overdue recognition of the problem. I hope it will lead to good news for the people of Stockport".
