An extra 2,000 of the most disadvantaged pupils in Stockport are set to benefit from a cash boost to the Lib Dems' Pupil Premium, according to Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell.
Lib Dem Children's Minister Sarah Teather announced this week that next year the government are extending the Pupil Premium to cover any child that has been registered for Free School Meals (FSM) in the past six years - not just the children currently registered.
The Pupil Premium also rising in value by £112 to £600 per pupil, 7,610 pupils in Stockport are set to benefit next year - 2,141 more than this year - from £4.5m of funding.
A number of schools in Mr Stunell's constituency could benefit, with Werneth (£189,600), Stockport School (£132,000) and Marple Hall (£106,200) all in line for six figure boosts to their budgets.
The Pupil Premium is targeted at England's most disadvantaged pupils, including looked after children. Next year, across the UK, the Premium will be worth £1.25 billion.
Commenting, Andrew Stunell MP said:
"This is great news for Stockport's schools. In 2008, only one in two hundred children eligible for Free School Meals achieved three "A's" at A-level. For too long, a child's life chances have been dictated by their social background.
"Children from less well-off families far too often have lower educational attainment than those from better off families. This is unacceptable, and is something that Liberal Democrats are determined to change.
"I'm delighted that we are investing £4.5m in helping an extra 2,000 pupils in Stockport next year reach their full potential and get the better start in life they deserve."
