Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell has welcomed today's visit to Stockport of the Commons Communities and Local Government Committee as part of their "Beyond Decent Homes" inquiry.
Stockport has an affordable homes crisis. The number of people on council house waiting lists rose to 9,328 this year, whilst 430 fewer affordable homes were built across Greater Manchester in the last year, compared to 2001.
The Committee's inquiry will look into what steps the Government needs to take to ensure that decent housing standards are met and sustained after 2010, and will quiz several key housing experts during it's session in Stockport.
Commenting, Andrew Stunell MP said:
"The CLG Committee's visit to Stockport is a welcome one, and I hope they get an impression of the housing situation we face in the borough.
"Affordable housing is becoming more scarce, and council house waiting lists are on the rise. We need more social housing, but it needs to be good quality.
"Poorly insulated homes have left many low income families sliding into fuel poverty, and it is vital that any new plan to tackle the affordable housing shortage also ensures we get high efficiency homes, giving low bills and slowing down climate change.
"I'm sure the Committee's report will be all the better informed for having come to Stockport, and I look forward to seeing their proposals."
