RACE ATTACKS QUADRUPLE IN GREATER MANCHESTER

August 17, 2009 11:30 AM

Andrew StunellThe number of racially aggravated offences reported across Greater Manchester has gone up four-fold in ten years, according to research from Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell.

The figures, released to the Liberal Democrats by the Home Office, show that:

  • In 1999 there were 693 racially or religiously aggravated offences committed in Greater Manchester.
  • In 2008, this had risen to 3,637, five times as many.
  • Greater Manchester Police Force recorded the second-highest number of incidents in the country.
  • Nationally, the only Police Force to see the number of racially motivated attacks fall was the Met, the number of offences dropping by half.

Now Mr Stunell is calling for Greater Manchester Police Force to take action to combat this spiralling problem.

Commenting, Andrew Stunell said:

"This rise in reports of racially motivated attacks is alarming, and will be of concern to anyone who values tolerance and diversity.

"It is simply unacceptable that anyone in modern Britain is the victim of crime simply because of the colour of their skin, and we shouldn't stand for it.

"I am pleased that the Police have improved their recording and response to race-related crimes, but that alone doesn't explain the dramatic increases in the number of racially motivated attacks reported in the region.

"The Police in London seem to be getting on top of the problem there, and if they can tackle this crisis in London, then we can do so here in Greater Manchester too. It is vital that our local police force learns from the Metropolitan Police what works and what doesn't, and promotes best practice to try and get this problem under control."

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
