GREEN HOUSING CAMPAIGN COULD SAVE HOMEOWNERS UP TO £300 PER YEAR

Local MP Andrew Stunell this week joined with Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud outside Parliament to help him insulate his "house" and back his green housing campaign - which could see homeowners in Stockport save up to £300 a year on energy bills.

Grand Designs Great British Refurb Campaign, led by Kevin, has gained the support of thousands of homeowners across the country and is asking the Government for support to make their homes more energy efficient.

Mr Stunell had his own Private Members Bill, the Sustainable and Secure Buildings Act, passed in 2004, which enables the government to change the Building Regulations to require homes to be greener and more sustainable. Now Mr Stunell is calling for the government to use their existing powers to improve the energy efficiency of local homes - and reduce energy bills.

Commenting, Andrew Stunell said:

"It's a scandal that the government has failed to act to improve our poorly insulated housing stock - especially when my bill gave them the tools to do something about it.

"Buildings account for over half of all carbon emissions, and they have to be the place to start if we are serious about stopping global warming.

"An effective programme of retrofitting has the potential to substantially reduce energy bills, create thousands of "green collar" jobs to revive our flagging construction industry, help the UK meet its climate change targets, and provide a green road out of recession. It is vital that the government act, and act soon.

Kevin McCloud, host of Grand Designs on Channel 4, said:

"We urgently need a plan of action to help us deliver our climate change targets. A nationwide programme of green refurbishment is an ideal solution.

"A green revolution in housing is needed to create a major reduction in carbon emissions and to provide a boost to the economy through the creation of green collar jobs in our communities.

"But in order to achieve this, the government must first remove the cost barrier and make it a real solution for the nation's homeowners."
