Sir Menzies Campbell QC MP is backing the campaign to save Stockport's postmark
Stockport's fight to keep its postmark has been given heavyweight support in Parliament, with former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell QC MP, backing the campaign.
Sir Menzies, speaking from Westminster today, branded the decision as "disgraceful" and criticised Royal Mail's handling of the announcement.
The campaign to save the postmark started after local MP Andrew Stunell was told by Royal Mail bosses that they planned to close the Stockport mail sorting office and move all postal sorting to Manchester. The proposals have been condemned by all parties on the Council, and in Parliament Mr Stunell and Cheadle MP Mark Hunter have tabled a motion calling for a rethink.
Sir Menzies, speaking from Westminster today, branded the decision as "unnecessary" and criticised Royal Mail's handling of the announcement.
Commenting, Sir Menzies Campbell QC MP said:
"This decision is hugely disrespectful to the proud history and identity of the people of Stockport.
"Royal Mail has handled this whole affair pretty badly, apparently they tried to sneak the decision in without giving notice. Only the diligence of the local MPs has brought this to light.
"I would urge Royal Mail to use a bit of commonsense and reverse their decision. I am not surprised at the reaction they have got in the town. It is an unwarranted undermining of Stockport's independence."
Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell added:
"I'm delighted to have Sir Menzies' support over this issue. The decision to scrap the postmark is already being strongly opposed locally, and is now attracting opposition from national politicians as well.
"Royal Mail needs to think twice, and keep the Stockport postmark. They need to recognise that we're not a suburb of Manchester, but a proud and successful town."
