Stockport Beekeepers and local MP Andrew Stunell met last week at the Dialstone Centre to urge local residents to plant more bee-friendly plants across the Borough.
Their call has been triggered by a steep fall in bee numbers in the last two years, and is part of a national campaign to improve the health of bees - vital for pollination and for British-grown food supplies worth £165 million a year.
Mr Stunell highlighted the problem when he met Environment Secretary Hilary Benn in London recently, and the Government have now chipped in with £4.3 million of extra funding to gather more information from beekeepers and undertake more research into bee health, as part of a ten-year plan to protect and improve the health of honey bees in England and Wales.
Commenting, Andrew said:
"Without bees we would be without a big proportion of the food we eat every day. They pollinate our plants, which in turn feed us and our animals.
"If the UK bee population continues to fall, not only are they at risk of extinction, but we are at risk of losing £800m in the economy over five years. This is why I welcome the fact that the Government have finally paid this issue the attention it deserves.
"But this is also something that everyone with a garden can do something about - by planting more bee friendly plants. Beekeepers also play their part, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to attend local beekeeping classes and learn the skill of beekeeping."
