STUNELL URGES STOCKPORT STUDENTS TO TAKE "CHANCE OF A LIFETIME"

March 10, 2009 2:30 PM

Andrew StunellLocal MP Andrew Stunell is urging young people in Stockport to consider volunteering overseas with Platform2 this summer. Paid for by the Department for International Development, the fully funded trips are run by Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and BUNAC, and there are still 150 spaces left to apply for.

Platform2 is a unique opportunity for young people to volunteer overseas, who might not otherwise get the chance to volunteer in a developing country. The trip is fully-funded, with applicants only having to pay for transport to and from their interview, to and from Heathrow Airport, and any passport costs.

Andrew, who is a member of the International Development Select Committee, and was involved in aid and development projects earlier in his career, was today urging as many Stockport youngsters as possible to get involved with the project.

Commenting, Andrew said:

"You could be going to countries such as Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, India or Peru for a life-changing 10 week placement which will make a real difference to the local community.

"I have worked on development projects in the past, so I know personally how challenging and rewarding these projects can be.

"If you're 18-25 (at the time of travel) and have or are eligible for a UK passport, you can apply now for a trip in May or August. You can get more details and download an application form at www.myplatform2.com

"This is a life-changing opportunity so if you are young and you want to discover more about yourself and make a difference wherever you work, why not get the ball rolling?"

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
