Local MP Andrew Stunell was today claiming victory in his campaign to ease rush-hour overcrowding for Hazel Grove commuters after Northern Rail bosses backed down and announced an extra service on the busy Manchester Piccadilly-Hazel Grove line.
Andrew met with Northern Rail executives on Friday (6th February) at Hazel Grove Station for the announcement that the 17.23 train to Buxton will now additionally stop at Hazel Grove.
Andrew had previously organised a well-supported public petition to campaign for an extra train, and took Northern Rail Bosses along to meet the 17.23 service from Hazel Grove to see the "carnage" of rush hour for themselves.
Commenting, Andrew said:
"This is great news, and I'm pleased that Northern Rail have decided to act so quickly. It was the commonsense solution.
"The train had often been running with just 2 carriages, and was so grossly overcrowded that passengers couldn't physically force themselves on to it.
"Of course this does not solve all the problems, but it does mean there is a second choice for Hazel Grove commuters from Piccadilly, and that those who used to rely on this service to travel from Deansgate and Oxford Road will again be able to do so.
"I am continuing to press Northern Rail about the morning trains, but hopefully evening commuters at least will be able to have a more comfortable journey.
