Andrew Stunell MP, Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling, on the the Parliamentary Bike Ride
Stockport Council's plan to invest £50,000 in a new Cycle Parking at Stations Scheme has been given the thumbs up by local MP Andrew Stunell.
Hazel Grove station in Mr Stunell's constituency will be the first to get improved facilities designed to encourage more commuters to cycle to their station, park up, and take the train into work. Measures will include increasing the number of "Sheffield Stands" to provide secure parking facilities for cyclists, as well as street lighting improvements.
Hazel Grove Station was chosen earlier in the year for ATOC's (Association of Train Operating Companies) Station Travel Plan Pilot scheme, focused on reducing the impact of passenger's travel to and from the station. In addition, Stockport Council is currently investing in Personalised Travel planning in the Hazel Grove area. All of these initiatives are expected to increase the number of people wanting to cycle-commute.
Commenting, Andrew, who is also Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group in Parliament, said:
"This scheme is a great idea, and credit must go to Stockport Council for investing the money.
"Cycle-commuting is a great way to get to work, and has a number of added benefits. It's cheaper, healthier, is better for the environment, and helps to reduce congestion on our roads. Better park and ride facilities at Hazel Grove are a good start, and come a lot cheaper that the Congestion Charge!
"Stockport Council are now rightly acknowledged as pioneers nationally with this scheme, and I'm sure that many of my constituents will benefit from this investment in the near future."
