New research published today to mark the RSPCA's Freedom Food Farm Animal Week shows more and more people are thinking about animal welfare when it comes to shopping and eating habits.
The research found that in spite of the credit crunch more than a half of respondents said that they would choose free-range eggs over those produced by battery hens, and more than a half claimed that the standard of animal welfare would influence what they bought compared to five years ago.
Reacting to the new research, local MP and Animal Rights Champion, Andrew Stunell, commented:
"It is great news to hear that shoppers in Stockport are moving towards better ethical eating habits.
"It is not easy to make ethical purchases in these uncertain economic times, but the changes we are seeing really shows how committed local people are to the welfare of animals"
"However, while this report shows an improvement in our attitude to animal welfare, there is still much more work to be done. Nearly two in every three eggs that we eat are still produced by battery hens.
"We must now put pressure on the retailers and restaurants in Stockport to ensure all food is up to the welfare standards we expect."
