Plans for a new ultra-high-speed rail line between Stockport and Manchester to London and Birmingham have been backed in Parliament by local MP Andrew Stunell. The line would be a key part of a plan to build a network of high speed rail links in Britain.
The West Coast Mainline through Stockport is predicted to be at maximum capacity within 15 years, and with oil prices still rising and the environment under ever greater threat, the Government is coming under pressure to commit to expanding and improving the rail network.
Now Mr. Stunell has joined with other MPs asking the Government to make the first move toward building new rail links. New lines would be an efficient alternative both to road transport and short-haul flights, experts say.
Mr. Stunell commented:
"Stockport to London in an hour would revolutionise the way we think about train travel. It would be the best alternative for long distance journeys in England, just as the French TGV is on the Continent.
"Other governments all round Europe have committed to expanding their rail networks so why can't ours?
"The benefits of a good rail network are very clear. It's time to get serious about rail travel, because we will rely on it more and more in the future."

Notes to editors:
1. Andrew Stunell has signed EDM 1881:
That this House notes the recent speculation regarding possible expansion of high speed rail links across much of the United Kingdom; acknowledges the massive roll out of such services which is underway in Europe, given the likelihood of higher oil prices being the norm for the foreseeable future and adversely affecting car drivers; and calls on the Government to respond positively to an environmentally-friendly method of public transportation by committing itself to, and making the necessary finance available for, high speed rail feasibility studies in all regions of the United Kingdom to ensure that high speed rail can begin to be seen as a reality for future generations of commuters.
