Climate Bill doesn't go far enough, says Local MP

April 21, 2008 2:25 PM
  • Climate Change globeTougher targets for Aviation Industry needed

The airline industry must be made to meet crucial environment targets, according to Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell. "Flying is one of the fastest growing sources of climate changing gases," Mr Stunell said. "If we are serious about protecting the planet for our children, we cannot afford to allow the aviation industry to be exempt from carbon targets."

The Climate Change Bill, due to become law by summer, will set binding targets for cutting carbon dioxide. But there is growing pressure on the Government to strengthen the proposals, as campaigners and scientists are warning that the Bill must be tougher if it is to successfully tackle climate change.

"Climate change affects us all. This Bill should be a bold and innovative move to address our concerns; we cannot allow this opportunity slip us by.

"It is wrong for one industry to be allowed to flout the rules on climate change. Having a climate law that ignores aviation emissions is like having a drink driving law that ignores the effects of whisky.

"We must ensure the Bill reflects the latest science and shows strong international leadership, giving the people of Hazel Grove and people across the world the chance of a sustainable future."

Notes to editors:

1. Over 240 MPs have signed the Early Day Motion 736 calling for the Climate Change Bill to include carbon dioxide emissions from international aviation and set a tougher 80 per cent target for cutting carbon dioxide by 2050.

2. As currently drafted, the Bill requires a 60 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2050

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
