Local family over the moon as Minister says they can stay

December 14, 2007 5:20 PM

Andrew stunellA local family facing deportation have been told they can stay after a campaign by Andrew Stunell MP.

The Hazel Grove mother was working at a home run by national care home group, Southern Cross. But her application for a renewal of her work permit was turned down last month by the Home Office because her pay rate was said to be too low for the job.

However, after being challenged by Mr Stunell to recognise the value overseas care workers contribute to the care industry in the UK, the Home Office Minister, Liam Byrne, backed down.

Commenting, Andrew Stunell, said:

"This was a ridiculous situation that was terribly unfair on the hundreds of skilled staff from overseas and the care home residents who depend on them."

"I'm delighted that the Minister finally came to his senses and made it possible for a happy end for so many.

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.

    • If you agree, Andrew Stunell, the Liberal Democrats, and their elected representatives may use the information you provide to contact you about issues you may find of interest. Some of the contacts may be automated. You can opt out of these contacts at any time by contacting us.
