Stockport's two Lib Dem MPs say their Party's record 13 wins out of 21 across the town on Thursday night are a vote of confidence in the town and its regeneration.
"There are always those ready to knock the town and talk it down, but voters saw through all that, and swung to the Lib Dems. Our hard-working councillors got a huge vote of confidence, our share of the vote increased, and we gained yet another seat off the Tories", says Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell.
Cheadle's Mark Hunter said:
"The Conservatives had been openly boasting nationally that they would take seats off us. Instead, we held our seats well, and took Bramhall North off them. They've now slumped to third place in Stockport constituency, too, where we look set to do more damage to Labour in future elections."
"The Tories could only hold two seats on the night - their worst result for 12 years. It seems Stopfordians have seen through the so-called Cameron effect!"
According to Mr Stunell:
"We now have a record 36 Lib Dem councillors working hard for the town. It is a great vote of confidence in the work they all do."
