MP joins residents to show his support to Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

April 2, 2007 12:26 PM

Andrew talking to a police manThis evening, Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell will attend a Woodley Based Neighbourhood Watch Meeting to hear about the positive effect the group is having on their local community. MP Andrew Stunell will also be answering any questions the group has about issues in their area and plans for the future regarding various aspects of town.

The group was founded nine months ago by local residents, Diane, Tracey and Dawn as they felt that they would have a stronger voice if they grouped together, enabling them to express any concerns they had about issues in their local community.

Group Founder, Diane said:

"Our Neighbourhood watch scheme has been a great success so far. Over the last few months many local residents have contacted me to say that they really appreciated having a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in their area and that they are pleased with the renewed community spirit."

Commenting after the meeting, Mr Stunell said:

"Neighbourhood Watch Schemes help to build community relations, improve home security and the environment whilst increasing the sense of community spirit."

"I would like to thank everyone who is involved in Neighbourhood Watch schemes across Stockport for their time, energy and commitment to making our communities safer and happier"

Notes to Editors:

1. Press are welcome to attend the meeting of the Smithy Green Neighbourhood Watch tonight, 2nd April, 7pm, The Navigation Pub, Smithy Green, Woodley.

2. Neighbourhood Watch encourages people to be more observant of what is going on in their neighbourhood, to help each other and to bring their concerns and information about crime to the local police. By doing so, it has been shown to be possible to significantly improve home security, the environment and increase the sense of community spirit, thereby reducing the overall fear of crime in an area. The first scheme was started in 1982, and there are now over 160,000 schemes running throughout the UK
