Yesterday, Hazel Grove MP joined fellow Liberal Democrat MPs in voting against replacing the Trident nuclear submarines, which would cost the country billions of pounds and spoil future international nuclear disarmament talks.
Commenting after the vote, Mr Stunell said:
"The votes last night shamed Tony Blair. Eighty eight of his own MPs revolted and he relied on Tory support to renew Trident.
"Replacing Trident will make the world a less secure place.
"It shows the rest of the world that the UK is not serious about negotiating the end of nuclear weapons and it will encourage countries such as Iran to continue developing their own nuclear programme.
"In 2010, the next round of international nuclear disarmament talks will be held. It is vital that they are successful, and choosing to replace Trident now pre-empts the outcome of those talks and could cause them to fail." ENDS
