This week in Westminster, local MP, Andrew Stunell has called on the Government to work with local authorities to get better support for families of children with autism to help avoid them reaching crisis point.
Mr Stunell's plea comes after the tragic deaths of Alison and Ryan Davies in April, and a recent National Audit of Services, Support and Provision for Children with Low Incidence Needs. The report says that national support for families of children with Fragile X Syndrome and autistic spectrum disorders is too low.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"Family support and respite services are vital for families with children with autism. Families often experience ongoing stress, and respite care helps maintain family stability and may provide opportunities for the child to participate in special activities.
"I am demanding that the Treasury use their review of children and young people as an opportunity to consider ways to improve support for families with children with these conditions."
Mr Stunell is also supporting Parliamentary motions calling on the Government to ensure all teachers receive appropriate training to best support children with autism and to ensure that all schools are 'autism-friendly' schools. Mr Stunell added:
"There is currently no requirement for trainee or practising teachers to undertake any training in autism, yet 1 in 110 children have autism. After our local tragedy, it is clearly vital to support the National Autistic Society's campaign, 'Make School Make Sense', and hope that soon all children with autism will have access to the education that is their right."
