Campaign for road must go on as local MPs press Minister

Reacting to their Commons debate today on the planned A555 Relief Road, local MPs, Andrew Stunell and Mark Hunter say the campaign to deliver the road must go on as the government continues to consider whether to approve the major road scheme.
During the debate, Mark once again pressed the case for construction of the A6 Hazel Grove bypass, the Poynton bypass and completion of the Manchester Airport Link Road.
Mark was joined in the debate by fellow Stockport MP Andrew Stunell who added his own support for the road and whose constituency would also benefit considerably from the relief road.
Transport Minister Gillian Merron responded to Mark's speech on behalf of the government and agreed that the scheme would have significant benefits for transport in the region but that the government was still not in a position to give final a decision until the end of the year.
Speaking after the debate, Mark said, "I was pleased to hear the Minister acknowledge the importance of the relief road for our area. I think she accepted the fact that the local road network simply cannot cope with the volume of traffic that passes over it and that we need the relief road if local people are to get the modern road system they deserve."
"I was less happy, however, to hear further indecision from the government over costs. Of course the cost of the road is rising as the government keeps delaying a final decision. It is frustrating that we seem likely to have to wait for another few months before knowing whether the government will approve the relief road or not."
"In the meantime, both Andrew Stunell and I will continue to campaign in favour of the relief road."
Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell added, "I hope the Minister got the message loud and clear about how vital the Relief Road will be for residents, businesses and commuters alike. If the government is serious about tackling congestion in our area, they must approve the road."
