Stunell celebrates innovative cricket initiative at Offerton High School

May 12, 2006 11:50 AM

Tomorrow evening, local MP, Andrew Stunell will join Governors and teachers of Offerton High School to hand certificates and awards out to primary pupils who have enjoyed cricket coaching from Offerton High School students over the past term.

Through linking Offerton High School with cricket clubs, the initiative has introduced High School students to the sport, who in turn have helped to show younger children in the area how to play. Over the next few weeks, the five primary schools involved will compete against each other, culminating in a Festival of Cricket in July.

Speaking ahead of the event, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell commented:

"Offerton High School's Cricket Initiative has been a huge success benefiting hundreds of local children. I am delighted to have the chance to present the learners with their bronze, silver and gold certificates.

"I am very proud that this initiative, which has gained regional and national interest, has being piloted in our area.

"At a time when we are increasingly aware of the problems faced by young people with regard to health and involvement in sport, it is great that Stockport students are being offered more sporting opportunities." ENDS

Notes to editors: Members of the local press are welcome to attend the Award Presentation, to be held at Offerton High School on Friday 12th May 2006. The event will start at 5.30 in the new restaurant in Woodbank building.
