This week local MP, Andrew Stunell has launched a campaign to stop the Government from extending the six-hour limit on Sunday opening hours for big stores.
Commenting on his campaign, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"Allowing big stores to open for longer on a Sunday would drain our local communities in Stockport.
"Small local shops, which are particularly important for people the elderly and families with small children, could face closure due to the loss of Sunday trade. People living close to shops would be affected by the noise and congestion associated with the shops all day, every day.
"I am particularly worried that the 15,000 shop workers in Stockport would find it harder to spend time with their families. They would face increasing pressure to work long hours on Sundays, and would be less likely to get premium pay.
"I am calling on the Government to ensure that Sundays should remain the weekly breather for everyone to enjoy."
