This week local MP, Andrew Stunell, was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, working to boost local democracy and build sustainable communities, by the new leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell. The 'Super Ministry', run by John Prescott, covers local government, planning and housing issues.
Commenting on his new position, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to fight for improved local services and communities, and better local democracy in this new role.
"I will relish the chance to go into battle with the Government about the unfair council tax, the scandal of homelessness and the lack of affordable homes in Stockport and across the UK.
"We now have a bright new team of MPs on the frontbench who I look forward to working with towards a great future for the Liberal Democrats."
Mr Stunell is stepping down as the Liberal Democrat Chief Whip after 5 years "working behind the scenes" in Parliament. He has a strong local government pedigree, including serving for 8 years on Stockport Council.
