Andrew Stunell, the Liberal Democrat MP for Hazel Grove, today accused the Government of putting the long term future of the Post Office network at risk by refusing to renew the Post Office card account (POCA) beyond 2010.
Andrew Stunell MP has attacked the Government's decision, saying:
"We've lost seven Post Offices in my own constituency in the last 5 years, and this decision means that many of the others could face the axe.
"It is time this Government woke-up to the importance of the Post Office network, not only in economic terms, but also for its vital community role. Post Offices act as a focal point for many local communities in Stockport, and yet this Government seems content to see the network crumble.
"3,000 Post Offices closed under the Tories, and we have seen further closures under Labour.
"I am demanding the Department of Work and Pensions think again and renew the contract for the card account after 2010."
