After worsening debt problems facing disabled Stockport residents were highlighted by the charity Leonard Cheshire, local MP Andrew Stunell has asked the Government to step in.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell explained:
"The Leonard Cheshire report makes grim reading. Disabled people across Britain often suffer distressing debt problems - most have lower than average incomes, higher than average living costs, and there is a lack of understanding by creditors and investors.
"In Stockport I know that disabled people are often faced with large amounts of debt from buying necessities, like mobility aids or physiotherapy costs. The onset of a disability often forces people to leave work, leaving them particularly vulnerable to spiralling debt which they have little prospect of clearing."
Leonard Cheshire's Head of Policy, John Knight said:
"We are delighted that Mr Stunell is supporting us in Parliament. This is a major issue in Stockport. We hope that the Mr Stunell's support will persuade both the Government and the financial services industry to work to improve the current situation." ENDS
