Figures released this week by the Department for Skills and Education have revealed that the Government plans to increase the gap in funding between pupils in Stockport and Manchester over the next 2 years.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell has slammed the new figures as a grim disappointment for Stockport schools. Mr Stunell said:
"The new figures are a slap in the face to the pupils and parents of Stockport.
"Teachers and Governors will rightly be outraged that the Government is going to widen the gap in funding between Manchester and Stockport pupils still more.
"Each year, every pupil in Stockport has hundreds of pounds less spent on their education than children down the road in Manchester, and the Government now plans to increase the gap by £50 next year and almost £60 the year after.
"Stockport schools have been consistently under funded by Whitehall for years, putting more and more pressure on council tax payers and on school budgets.
"Government spending on Stockport pupils is well below the national average and the gap is set to widen at least until 2008 as the Government refuses to change their unfair funding formula." ENDS
