Calls by Marple Bridge based Manchester Canoe Club for increased access to waterways for non-powered craft have been taken up in Westminster this week with a by local MP, Andrew Stunell.
Andrew Stunell, who is backing the club's plea to open up rivers and canals to canoeists, said:
"98% of rivers in the UK have no access rights to the public. That means that the two and a half million canoeists in the UK are restricted to just 2% of waterways in England and Wales.
"Canoeing is a healthy, fun sport which many people in Stockport and Manchester enjoy.
"Canoeists and users of other non-powered crafts deserve the same access rights as walkers have. We should learn from Germany and Hungary, where landowners are required to allow canoes on the majority of rivers. This has helped them become two of the most successful canoeing nations in the Olympics.
"Increasing access to waterways in Britain will increase citizen participation in canoeing, helping the health of the nation and opening up the sport to future Olympic champions." ENDS
