Local MP, Andrew Stunell has demanded full and fair funding for free elderly bus fares in Greater Manchester following concerns that the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority will be short changed when the Government distribute cash for the new scheme.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"I am delighted that old age pensioners will finally have free bus travel, and hope that this will lead to increased mobility for the elderly and increased service levels for everyone.
"However, the government is planning to fund the scheme through the unfair Revenue Support Grant which could leave our area £7 million short of the amount required to implement the initiative.
"It is an unfair funding formula which has already short changed the people of Stockport in education and police funding.
"I have challenged John Prescott to give the additional funding for free elderly bus fares according to the needs of each transport authority, and not through the outrageously unfair funding formula the government has devised."
