"70% of carers in the North West believe their career prospects have been affected due to caring responsibilities" - Stunell

Almost two-thirds (65%) of the UK's six million unpaid carers believe their career prospects have been affected because of their caring responsibilities, according to the results of a new survey released today to mark the start of Carers Week 2005 (June 13-19).

Commenting on the results of the survey, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:

"The results of the survey are worrying. Almost 70% of carers in the North West believe that caring has affected their career. Shockingly, almost 80% of carers in our area use their annual leave from paid employment for caring.

"I am delighted to support Carers Week. It is long overdue recognition of all the vital hard work done by carers across the country, and here in Stockport."

Notes to Editors

1. The survey was conducted by Carers Week during March and April 2005. Data was collected on paper and online from 3,010 carers. Anonymous responses were excluded leaving 2,903 in total, of whom 1,090 are currently in paid employment.

2. 67% of carers interviewed in the North West believed that their career prospects have been affected because of their caring responsibilities. 79% of interviewees in the NW use some of their annual leave from their paid employment for caring.
