Stockport's two Liberal Democrat MPs, Patsy Calton and Andrew Stunell, have launched a campaign to stop illegal nuisance calls in the run-up to the General Election in Stockport.
Their concern comes after local residents who have said they don't want nuisance calls, and have registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to stop such calls, reported being "cold called" by the Conservative Party.
Patsy Calton MP said:
"All political parties should respect the wishes of people who are TPS registered, and not bother them with unwanted phone calls. The letter and spirit of the law should be honoured, and all the political parties should respect the wishes of those voters who have asked not to be called.
"The Liberal Democrats spend considerable time and money on trying to ensure we do not make calls to TPS registered homes, unless the resident has previously given us the number when contacting us about a local issue."
Andrew Stunell MP added:
"Tory and Labour have both tried to ignore the law, with huge national phone banks at work. I have received complaints from people who are TPS registered, and who are angry at having had these unwanted calls. It is time that the other two parties respected the rights of voters and consumers. If they don't, they should remember they face a £5,000 fine."
