MPs' Challenge on Police Cash

February 11, 2005 12:00 AM

In a parliamentary motion, Stockport's two Liberal Democrat MPs, Patsy Calton and Andrew Stunell have challenged the Home Secretary to guarantee the cash needed to maintain the current level of service of the Greater Manchester Police.

Patsy Calton said:

"Unless the Home Secretary secures adequate funding for Greater Manchester police, they will have to cut the numbers of police on our streets, and halt training for Police Community Support Officers. It is a scandal."

"We are bringing this to Parliament because we must have an immediate guarantee of adequate funding from the Home Secretary."

Andrew Stunell added:

"Cutting crime is one of the most serious concerns to the people of Stockport and Greater Manchester."

"We are seeing one ill thought out policy on crime after another with Labour. We want to use the millions of pounds that Labour plan to spend on unpopular, expensive and pointless ID Cards for 10,000 more police on our streets."

Now Patsy Calton and Andrew Stunell are asking MPs from across the parties to back their plea to keep bobbies on the beat across Greater Manchester.

Notes to editors:

1) The text of the Early Day Motion tabled on 10th February 2005 is:

This House notes with grave concern the assessment made by the Chair of the Greater Manchester Police Authority in his letter of 21st January 2005 to the Home Secretary that without additional Police Grant the Authority will be forced to move operational police officers from front line service into essential support roles currently staffed by civilians; will be unable to train or equip PCSOs for their extra powers; and that the Police's existing high levels of performance will be seriously undermined, and therefore calls on the Home Secretary to give a clear assurance to the people of Greater Manchester that he will guarantee a level of funding that will at the least permit the current level of operational policing on the streets to be maintained throughout the coming financial year.

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
