Local MP, Andrew Stunell has joined forces with Breakthrough Breast Cancer to urge women to take up their breast cancer screening appointments, following reports that one in six women fail to turn up for appointments.
Andrew Stunell said:
"The findings of the Breakthrough report are alarming because the earlier breast cancer is detected the better your chances of survival are. About 180 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Stockport. To reduce the death toll from this devastating disease, women, especially those over 60 must go for screening when they get that letter."
The report was jointly commissioned by Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the All-Parliamentary Group. Andrew Stunell is calling on the Health Secretary to put more effort into a public awareness campaign that stresses the importance of attending appointments.
Andrew Stunell added:
"One in nine women in Stockport will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some stage in their life. I am urging women to give themselves the best chance of a long and healthy life."
