Local MP Andrew Stunell challenged the Minister for Regional Government, Nick Raynsford in Parliament yesterday over Government decision to cut funding for Metrolink. The Hazel Grove MP told Mr Raynsford that he should bring forward an effective plan for the North West Regional Assembly that would see power back in the hands of the North West instead of out of touch Whitehall bureaucrats.
Andrew Stunell said:
"We need a North West Regional Assembly as a bulwark against arbitrary central Government action."
He attacked the double whammy of Metrolink cuts and the refusal of the Ikea development alongside the M60 in Stockport.
Andrew Stunell added:
"The decision to back out of the desperately needed Metrolink and their planning refusal of Ikea demonstrate just how out of touch and wilfully oblivious central Government is to regional needs.
"We need a strong North West Regional Assembly to protect us against arbitrary central Government decisions."
