Stunell's Greener and Safer Homes Bill takes Action

September 14, 2004 12:00 AM

Local MP Andrew Stunell struck a blow in the fight against climate change when his Greener and Safer Homes Bill became an Act of Parliament today.

His Success follows 9 months of debate since he introduced his Bill back in January.

Andrew Stunell said:

"My new Act hands the Government the tools to create greener safer homes that are energy efficient, cheaper to run and resistant to burglary. If the Government accept the challenge, it could be a big step forward in Britain's battle to fight climate change."

Household energy use accounts for 27% of carbon dioxide emissions. The energy use of all buildings is responsible for 54% of CO2 emissions.

"Most people don't realise how polluting their homes are. And the problem of high fuel bills and winter deaths is particularly severe in the UK. In fact fuel poverty deaths are unique to the UK.

"My Sustainable and Secure Buildings Act could make these needless tragedies a thing of the past and it is another weapon in the fight against climate change."

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
