Alarmed by reports from the Stockport NHS Trust that the accident and emergency department experienced an unprecedented surge over the winter that is not abating, Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell is pleading with Stockport locals to use A&E only in real emergencies.
Andrew Stunell said:
"Whenever possible, people with minor ailments should see their GP first rather than attending A&E. It is a pity that resources are stretched to breaking point and medical staff are put under this level of pressure. We must do our bit to lighten their load.
"It's tempting to go to the doctor or A&E for every ailment, but often your local pharmacist will do the trick."
Stockport NHS trust contacted Mr Stunell to ask for his backing in their efforts to stem the tide of patients after experiencing a startling 10% increase in the number of A&E attendants.
Mr Stunell added,
"This situation has wider repercussions on the availability of beds for operations and other key services."
