Today in parliament, Andrew Stunell added his backing to the campaign to protect the rights of Stockport shoppers to buy GM-free food in the UK. Mr Stunell is urging the government to back a new law to prevent GM contamination of all foods.
Andrew Stunell said:
"I've had many letters from people in Stockport who are concerned about GM contamination. Along with the vast majority of the population, I am still unconvinced that we should allow commercial planting of GM crops."
Next week in Parliament, a genetically Modified Organisms Bill is being brought forward by a group of backbench MPs. It would regulate any future planting of GM crops to prevent cross-contamination of organic fruit and vegetables.
Last week the Government announced plans to allow the commercial planting of GM crops.
Andrew Stunell added,
"I'm giving this bill my full backing because it is responding and listening to peoples reservations in a way that this Government is blatantly failing to do. The Government's 'big conversation' about GM crops has been exposed as little more than a PR exercise.
"We need extensive scientific trials before we can attempt to make radical decisions about the future of our food." ENDS
