Local MP Andrew Stunell who as Liberal Democrat Chief Whip masterminded teams of MPs to visit the two Parliamentary by-elections last week, commented on the results which led to a defeat for Labour by Liberal Democrats in Leicester and a relegation to third place for Conservatives in Birmingham Hodge Hill.
Andrew Stunell said:
"With Tony Blair's credibility destroyed by the Iraq war and with yet another new leader of the Conservatives the voters have turned to the Liberal Democrats.
"It was the Liberal Democrats who thrashed the Tories and gave Tony Blair two wonderful black eyes."
Stockport is already a Liberal Democrat stronghold with two MPs and a Liberal Democrat controlled council. The recent European elections saw a further move away from the Tories and towards Lib Dems in the North.
The Lib Dems overturned a 13,243 majority in Leicester and notched up a record swing in Birmingham to slash Labours majority to just 460.
