Local MP, Andrew Stunell has joined Oxfam's campaign urging Sportswear companies bearing the Olympic symbol to improve the harsh working conditions of women in Third World countries.
Andrew Stunell said:
"Sportswear is a global multi million pound industry with huge profit margins, yet workers, mostly women in Third World countries, are wilfully exploited. Their working conditions couldn't be further away from the Olympic banner of fairness, freedom and human achievement.
This week, marks the final full inspection of the Olympic stadium in Athens. Andrew Stunell is urging Sportswear companies, the International Olympic committee and British Olympic Association to meet Fair Play at the Olympics to discuss practical steps that can be taken to end harsh conditions.
"I'm backing Stockport Oxfam in their plea to Sportswear companies to end their double standards. Sports shops workers in Stockport earn above the minimum wage, yet workers in the Third world are treated like second class humans.
Andrew Stunell added: "The British Government must use its influence where it can to make sure the spirit of the Olympics extends to all those involved in the games." ENDS
