Passive smoking costs Stockport NHS £9 million a year and kills 5 people a shock passive smoking report from the British Medical Association claims. Now Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell is calling for action to bring an end to smoke filled public areas.
Andrew Stunell said:
"The British Medical Association estimates that about 5 people in Stockport die prematurely every year from inhaling other people's smoke. Dozens more have asthma and other breathing difficulties."
Stockport council settled a high profile damages claim for passive smoking at work a few years ago and no longer allows smoking in work places.
"Although progress has been made, death and disease for passive smokers is still a needless Stockport tragedy."
Mr Stunell is backing a campaign by ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) for tighter restrictions on smoking in public spaces and the workplace. ASH's campaign has won the support of many health organisations including the government's Chief Medical Officer but the government have failed to put words into action.
"Smokers are well aware of the damage smoking causes to their health and they choose to smoke. That's their right, but we must make sure that when we exercise our rights, we do it without jeopardising the rights of others." END
