Local MP Andrew Stunell is backing the campaign by the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Authority (DVLA) targeting road tax dodgers in the North West.
Ahead of new figures showing a sharp increase in the number of motorists voluntarily relicensing their vehicles as a result of the campaign, MP Andrew Stunell said:
"The DVLA and the Greater Manchester Police Authority are clearly making a winning team. 3,771 extra people have voluntarily relicensed their vehicles raising almost half a million pounds in the first month of the campaign alone."
The DVLA have set up a hotline in the North West inviting the public to help them track irresponsible motorists as part of a road safety campaign. Mobile camera units are also in operation and police are undertaking road side checks to detect unlicensed vehicles and motorists committing other road safety offences.
Mr Stunell added, "Honest motorists are fed up with the small core who continually evade paying their road tax and make life difficult for the rest of us. Too often tax dodgers don't have up to date insurance or MoT certificates and are often involved in some other form of criminality.
"This strategy is working for Greater Manchester but it's important that we don't lose momentum at this stage of the game." ENDS
