Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell is suddenly the most popular MP in Britain after drawing the top spot in a ballot of MPs able to take their own bill through Parliament next year, and make it into law.
Andrew Stunell said: "Each year I've been in Parliament, I have of course put my name in the hat. I've never got anywhere, but this year I'm top of the draw.
"Everyone who has ever thought of an Act of Parliament, or a wrong that they would like to see put right is knocking on my door wanting me to fight their cause.
"Of course my new found popularity will be short lived - once I've made my choice, all those not selected will slink away leaving me with the job of making my bill fit for law."
Twenty MPs were picked out of the annual Private Members' Bill Ballot to begin the New Year. Due to the shortage of Parliamentary time, the MP at the top of the draw is most likely to get their bill passed into law. Precious time is usually taken up by Government bills.
Andrew Stunell added, "This is a real privilege for me. I've been given the opportunity to adjust the system a little by making a law which hopefully improves some aspect of daily life." ENDS
