Local MP, Andrew Stunell is backing a campaign by the national gas watchdog CORGI, warning DIY enthusiasts not to DIY with gas.
Andrew Stunell said: "This is a big safety problem. Surveys show that 9 out of 10 domestic gas repairs carried out by someone other than a CORGI-registered installer have serious safety defects. The result could be a gas escape, or lethal carbon monoxide leaks, which can kill within minutes. The message is that gas is perfectly safe in the right hands, but dangerous in the wrong hands. Use a CORGI-registered installer.¡¨"
"Gas installers are legally required to be CORGI-registered. But Mr Stunell says there are cowboy installers around. ¡§If your installer can¡¦t produce a CORGI photocard with a valid expiry date, don¡¦t let him near your gas supply.¡¨"
"Andrew Stunell recommends Stockport residents follow a few simple rules:"
"X Never DIY with gas"
"X Only use a CORGI registered installer ¡V it¡¦s the law.
"X If he can't show a CORGI ID card, show him the door."
"¡§The Government must do more to promote the essential work that CORGI do to stamp out cowboy gas installers. It is essential that the message of safety with gas gets through to every Stockport resident.¡¨"
