Local MP, Andrew Stunell, is calling for the Government to respect the rights of Stockport pensioners. The Government has signalled that the days of the pension book are numbered, despite 55% of Stockport pensioners preferring to receive their money this way.
Mr Stunell said:
"Stockport pensioners should have the freedom to choose the system that's best for them. The new system will have pensioners filling out complicated forms, remembering new pin numbers and there will be stricter limits on the number of people who can cash in cheques on their behalf. "
"This isn't about hollow sentimentality; these changes are going to lead to a lot of upheaval for the thousands of pensioners in Stockport who rely on their pension books."
"The new system means that payments will have to be made through a bank account or Post Office Card Account. Each bank will operate under a different system and not all will allow post office access. Post offices will only allow one nominee to cash in cheques for a pensioner."
"Commenting on these arrangements Mr Stunell said "Apart from being inconvenient, this system is simply unworkable for the thousands of Stockport pensioners who suddenly fall ill, or rely on a number of different carers. This Government has not learnt its lesson - they still refuse to listen to what pensioners are saying." ENDS"
