Local MP, Andrew Stunell, is calling for tough energy-saving rules for new fridges and central heating boilers. Speaking in Parliament on Friday he told MPs that most homes could save 30% on their energy bills at the same time as helping to cut damaging carbon dioxide emissions and improving comfort levels.
Welcoming the Bill Mr Stunell said, "There is not doubt that a good sustainable energy policy is the key to leaving a sustainable planet for future generations as well as to us enjoying sustainable prosperity in the meantime."
Mr Stunell said, "This Bill seeks to introduce long-term targets for sustainable energy production and actions to conserve energy particularly in the domestic sector, which the government has failed to implement itself since the publication of its energy White Paper in February."
Mr Stunell called for the House to give its full support to the Bill and not let it be weakened by the government, as is frequently the fate of Private Members' Bills.
"As a country we waste too much energy and power, and I want this new bill to tackle that head on."
