Newspaper monopolies threaten local newsagents - Stunell

April 2, 2003 12:00 AM

Local MP Andrew Stunell is fighting on behalf of Stockport Newsagents in Parliament to end wholesale monopolies that are threatening to drive them out of business.

Carriage charges are imposed by newspaper wholesalers for delivering publications. In the Stockport area alone charges have risen by approximately £100,000 in the last 10 years.

Mr Stunell said, "Newsagents play a vital role in our local community and these anti-competitive practices are threatening their livelihood. They can't afford the charges yet they can't go elsewhere because the 3 major wholesalers have carved up the Stockport area between them. "

"I've received many concerned letters from newsagents who say that the system simply isn't working. Its high time the Government started listening before an essential community services get driven out of business."

"Andrew Stunell is backing recommendations by the Office of Fair Trading which says that the Government must put in measures that allow selling across territories."

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
