Stunell urges the Government to combat fraudulent charities

March 18, 2003 12:00 AM

Local MP Andrew Stunell is pressing the Government to introduce a formal charity check system to reduce fraudulent charity collections.

Mr Stunell said, "Well meaning donors in Stockport are being had by shady charities exploiting good intentions. This situation cannot be allowed to continue. The Government must follow the recommendations of the Dundee Report on better administration of charitable organisation. "

"Charities cannot be expected to police themselves. We can't allow a few bad eggs to spoil the reputation of the thousands of worthy charities out there. We have a right to know that our money is going to worthy causes, and unfortunately the present law doesn't do that. "

"Now Mr Stunell is backing a move in Parliament to introduce a charity checking system. A national system has been backed by many influential organisations, who are calling for the Government to allay public fears. "

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
