Stunell fights to bring disabled into the digital age

February 4, 2003 12:00 AM

Local MP Andrew Stunell is urging Parliament not to pass the Communications Bill without including provisions that ensure equal and affordable access to new technology for the disabled.

Commenting on the bill, Mr Stunell said "The visually impaired and deaf blind have been overlooked for too long by successive Governments. This bill offers a real chance to encourage manufacturers to design TV, radio and telephone equipment that's accessible to all, not just the majority."

"There are approximately 13,000 hearing impaired people in the Stockport area and their communication needs are not being met. Most access solutions aren't costly or technically difficult. Ensuring greater access to subtitles for instance would make a real difference to their enjoyment of television." "

"The bill is to be discussed by the Commons later this month and will set the rules for most types of electronic communication for the next 10 years. "

If you are a resident of the Hazel Grove constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
