Questioned in Parliament last week by local MP Andrew Stunell, the roads minister David Jamieson has backed calls to cut red tape and speed up work on the Hazel Grove Bypass.
The minister has now agreed to meet a Stockport deputation to plan how to avoid duplicating work carried out on previous schemes.
According to Mr Stunell:
"There was a very thorough and expensive public inquiry a decade ago and we need to find a way to take advantage of the work done then. It would be foolish to waste all that effort. Worst still, it could simply create unnecessary delay in getting this vital road to end transport misery for local residents."
The minister admitted there would be "some problem" if the scheme had to go back to square one and agreed to Mr Stunell's request for a round-table meeting to sort out procedures.
Afterwards Mr Stunell commented, " I am pleased the minister is looking for a way of cutting through the red tape. The sooner work starts on the ground the better."
